Beginning in January 2021, advances in AI research have produced a plethora of deep-learning models capable of generating original images from simple text prompts, effectively extending the human imagination. Researchers at OpenAI, Google, Facebook, and others have developed text-to-image tools that they have not yet released to the public, and similar models have proliferated online in the open-source arena and at smaller companies like Midjourney.

These tools represent a massive cultural shift because they remove the requirement for technical labor from the process of image-making. Instead, they select for creative ideation, skillful use of language, and curatorial taste. The ultimate consequences are difficult to predict, but — like the invention of the camera, and the digital camera thereafter — these algorithms herald a new, democratized form of expression that will commence another explosion in the volume of imagery produced by humans. But, like other automated systems trained on historical data and internet images, they also come with risks that have not been resolved.

The video above is a primer on how we got here, how this technology works, and some of the implications. And for an extended discussion about what this means for human artists, designers, and illustrators, check out this bonus video: https://youtu.be/sFBfrZ-N3G4

  1. Thanks for watching! The video above is a primer on how we got here, how this technology works, and some of the implications. And for an extended discussion about what this means for human artists, designers, and illustrators, check out this bonus video: https://youtu.be/sFBfrZ-N3G4

  2. Majority of things can be done by AI pretty soon, but I guess prostitution is one of the safest career right now that AI cannot do. Unless you know…

  3. And they say when ai will come hardwork will be gone and we will just do creative work but it's only till they ai= human means when and ai can do everything which human can then that's the end , people will have no value then except rich people because they own those assets

  4. To those that are scared that this AI is replacing human art, it really isn’t because humans are the ones giving AI the prompts because AI is incapable of creation on its on and can only recreate from information they know. Real human art isn’t just drawing like an art style but coming up with an idea and image and theme

  5. As much as this is fascinating for most, this is also deeply unsettling. I am a graphic designer and artist by profession and have to say, the art industry is pretty unforgiving of you are not at the top of your game. I can vouch for the talent and skill of any of my several friends in this industry who just about scrape by doing gigs and commissions. The competition this tech will introduce into the market is going to push quite a few of us out of our jobs. Maybe not today, not tomorrow, but how long does it really take in this world to turn an innovation into a business opportunity?

  6. The thing I don't get about all this is, how the images are being created. It seems like these AI are creating collages of multiple images based on the inputs, but are these images copyright free to use? Maybe I'm understanding the AI image creation process wrong. But if this is the way that it is working, does this not infringe on copyright laws of the original image creator/owner?

There is definitely a resemblance in some cases to original work, so are these AI images far enough removed away, from the original works to be classed as original work in a legal scenario? This kind of reminds me of sampling in the music industry and we have seen some high profile cases here, when it comes to altering original work, so I wonder what the legality of all this is.

  7. Wait, so if you were to post a piece online that you made, and someone asks the AI to make a Photo similar to the design you hand made, it will use your design, and other people's designs to make the best looking design?
    Isn't that art theft?
Corrent me if I'm wrong please.

  8. This is a great video by VOX , I hope you focus more on showing what's around and use your platform as a medium of show casing progress rather than pessimistic doom and gloom the world morale LOW don't add to it.
Most artists don't make enough money and the ones who do will not be affected by AI . What will change though is people looking for inspiration and ideas can que in some parameters and have some amazing results.

  9. This was a fantastic video! It explained the subject very well, and in a very beginner/artist-friendly fashion! While I disagree with some of James Gurney's opinion, he was an excellent pick, and it was a great way to show respect to some artists' positions as well.

  10. As a science fiction fan, I always assumed that the time when AI technology advanced to the point of artistic expression would be after my lifetime. Yet, here it is in a rapid breakthrough when I'm only 60.

  11. With technology development, jobs loose their purpose in society. As foreseen by people in the past, it's saddening in my opinion, to stop issuing jobs that people have interests in just because a piece of tech does it for you. Amazing, but terrifying altogether.

  12. The level of anxiety for tech vs art is not new, a similar existential crisis took the hearts of some painters with photography. I'll not go to say it's the same, the speed of the revolution is so fast that will be more traumatic but at the end we'll find new ways of sharing our obsessions

  13. John 3:16-21

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

    Mark 1.15

15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

  14. its not 1 AI that does this. that is an incorect statement in your title. there are several different AI programs that do similar things to produce images based on the requests and restrictions provided by the user.

  15. So Leighton space is like a universe or maybe the different aspects of a "picture universe" is being calculated by the Deep learning to create a universe or🤔 intelligence/brain then is able too create from and generate Unique Images from the universe that it created by learning
maybe 🤔? Maybe like a kid learning how to draw the older it gets the better and I say kid because we can tell a child draw me a bird but we don't know what type color size the child is going to draw why because he or she is an individual that's where the Deep learning and latent space comes in very cool if I'm actually understanding it correctly……

If you read this and you understand what I'm trying to say let me know if I missed anything or if I'm on the right track

  16. Hmmm, strange how positive the outlook on AI art was when there were only closed source options from Microsoft and Google…

  17. It will become another useless app on your device that will initially gain traction and soon will become blase just like Funny Camera Filters or that silly Gangnam Style song and dance.
    Oh so uninspiring.

  18. I feel bad for human creators that don't want their work used by the algorithm. There's no way to prove that it was their creation(s) that was used to make the image. The problem is compounded when you add in that every image generated is a true "1 of 1.
Still the technology is truly fascinating.

  19. The thing I find slightly disappointing is that none of the AI apps I have used allow the user to give feedback to help train the AI. For example "a chicken eating a deer" produces mostly just pictures of a chicken/deer hybrid rather than one consuming the other, but there's no way to tell the AI that an output was good or bad, so it can refine the model.

  20. Let us still not forget the fact that the generated images are derived from hundreds or thousands of creative artworks by us, humans. It is like the arts of different artist all come together to form an unimaginable piece we do not expect. It is still incomparable to an art piece that has the soul and passion of an artist.

  21. Wonder us one of the best apps for this. I must say tho, it is great use for a tool, one of the best tools for an artists. But only that, it’s not art and never will be art.

  22. I think this was bound to happen. I tried using one of these programs and it's actually cool. I think that having ways of giving credit to artists that are used for these programs would be a good step. I can see AI art being a great source of inspiration and ideas to use and plan out different types of art. For a novice like me, it can actually be a good learning tool over how to produce different types of art. This won't be an easy transition, but I think it's a necessary one that we need to hammer out the legal and ethical details now rather than waiting for them to haphazardly come together.

  23. Wow, glad with the advancement of AI compared to the olden days not too old AISB in 80's. As long as technology is used as part of us, it should be ok – but once technology especially AI got their independence day – there the problem will start escalating either for better or worse. Let us always beware. Still curious with live intelligent arrangement in music playing.

  24. In the future, humans will develop a computer chip as small as an atom that can process all of the mathematics of the universe! It's the 'who', that can manipulate the mathematics too their liking, that should be a real concern. You better believe it will be used against you!

  25. this is another way of preventing creative blocks. imagine you're stuck in a scene you're creating for a chapter for a fiction book you're writing, and you're stuck with only a bunch of words to describe it. putting those words as prompts in a dall-e based image production system can help even writers visualize the scene better and even come up with distinct personalities for the characters they's like to have for that particular scene. and that's just one way of using it in a manner that could help expand creative horizons. film makers and musicians can benefit from this too.

  26. This is just art. Imagine what will happen when the ai wants to recreate military tactics, wmd or even be able to infiltrate any boundary it wants. My god were fked
